Home / Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Laser hair removal is a treatment that uses concentrated light energy to target hair follicles. The laser energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair and converted into heat, which damages the follicle and reduces future hair growth. It is best described as long-term hair reduction, not always 100% permanent hair removal.

The laser targets melanin, the pigment found in hair. When the hair absorbs the laser energy, heat travels down to the follicle and weakens its ability to grow new hair. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple sessions are needed to treat hairs during the active growth phase.

Laser hair removal can give long-lasting hair reduction, but some hair may eventually grow back. Any regrowth is often finer, lighter and less dense than before. Maintenance sessions may be recommended depending on your hair type, hormones and treatment area.

Most clients need a series of sessions because only hairs in the active growth phase respond best to laser treatment. Many people require around 6–8 sessions, though the exact number depends on the area, hair thickness, skin type, hormones and consistency with appointments.

Treatment intervals vary by body area. Facial areas are often treated more frequently, while body areas may need longer gaps between sessions. Your dermatologist will recommend a schedule based on the area being treated and your hair-growth cycle.

Common areas include the upper lip, chin, face, underarms, arms, legs, bikini line, Brazilian area, chest, back, abdomen, shoulders, neck, hands and feet. Laser hair removal can be performed on many body areas, as long as the skin and hair are suitable for treatment.

Most people describe the sensation as a quick snap, mild heat or tingling feeling. Discomfort depends on the treatment area, hair density, skin sensitivity and laser settings. Modern systems often include cooling to make the treatment more comfortable.

Laser hair removal is generally safe when performed by trained professionals using
appropriate settings for your skin and hair type. However, it is a medical-aesthetic procedure and should be done carefully. Burns, pigment changes, blistering or scarring are possible, especially when treatment is performed incorrectly or aftercare is not followed.

Many modern laser systems can safely treat a wide range of skin tones when the correct wavelength and settings are used. Darker skin types require extra care because higher skin pigment can increase the risk of burns or pigmentation changes if the wrong settings are used.

Laser works best on hair that contains enough pigment, especially dark brown or black hair. Blonde, grey, white, red or very fine hair may not respond as well because there is less pigment for the laser to target.

Fine hair may respond less predictably than coarse, dark hair. During your consultation, your dermatologist will assess whether the area is suitable for laser or whether another hair-removal option may be better.

Yes, laser hair removal is commonly performed on the upper lip, chin, cheeks, jawline,
sideburns and neck. Facial hair can be influenced by hormones, so some clients may need ongoing maintenance sessions.

Yes. Many men choose laser hair removal for the back, chest, shoulders, neck, beard line, arms, legs or intimate areas. It can also help reduce shaving irritation and ingrown hairs.

Before treatment, avoid tanning and excessive sun exposure, do not wax or pluck the hair, and follow your clinic’s shaving instructions. The American Academy of Dermatology advises avoiding waxing, plucking, and electrolysis before laser because the laser needs the hair root to be present.

Yes, most areas should be shaved before treatment, usually 12–24 hours before your
appointment unless your dermatologist tells you otherwise. Shaving leaves the follicle intact while removing hair above the skin, making treatment more comfortable and effective.

Waxing and plucking remove the hair from the follicle. Laser needs the hair root in place to absorb the energy and target the follicle effectively. Shaving is allowed because it cuts the hair at the skin surface without removing the root.

It is usually best to avoid depilatory creams close to your treatment because they may irritate the skin. Ask your clinic how long to stop before your appointment.

Avoid tanning before treatment. Tanned skin contains more pigment, which can increase the risk of burns, irritation or pigmentation changes. This includes sun tanning, tanning beds and self-tanning products.

Yes, but you must be careful with sun exposure. Treated areas should be protected from the sun, and you should avoid arriving with a tan or sunburn. Sunscreen and sun protection are important before and after treatment.

Your practitioner will clean the area, check your skin, adjust the laser settings, and provide protective eyewear. The laser handpiece is passed over the treatment area, delivering pulses of light to the follicles. You may feel warmth, snapping or tingling during the session.

Treatment time depends on the area. Small areas such as the upper lip or underarms may take only a few minutes. Larger areas such as full legs, back or full body take longer.

Mild redness, warmth, or swelling around the follicles is common and usually settles within hours to a couple of days. These effects are usually temporary. Your dermatologist may recommend cooling, soothing gel, sunscreen and avoiding heat or friction.

After treatment, avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, intense exercise, tanning and harsh skincare products for the period recommended by your clinic. Keep the area clean, avoid scratching, and use sunscreen on exposed areas.

It is often best to avoid makeup immediately after facial laser, especially if the skin is red or sensitive. Your dermatologist may advise waiting at least 24 hours or until irritation settles.

Avoid heavy exercise, sweating, hot yoga, saunasand steam rooms for at least 24–48 hours or as advised by your dermatologist. Heat and sweat may increase irritation after treatment.

You may notice treated hairs shedding over the next 1–3 weeks. Hair growth usually
becomes slower, finer and patchier with each session. Results build gradually over the full course of treatment.

This is usually shedding. Treated hairs can move upward and fall out over the following days or weeks, which may look like new growth. Gentle exfoliation may be recommended after a few days if your skin is calm.

Hair grows in different cycles. Laser is most effective when hair is in the active growth
phase, but not all hairs are in that phase at the same time. Multiple sessions help target more follicles over time.

Missing one session may slow your progress, but it does not usually ruin your results. Book your next treatment as soon as possible so your dermatologist can keep you on track.

Yes. By reducing hair growth, laser hair removal can help reduce shaving bumps and
ingrown hairs for many people, especially in areas such as the bikini line, underarms, beard line and legs.

Laser hair removal offers longer-term hair reduction, while waxing gives temporary removal. Laser may also reduce ingrown hairs and the need for frequent shaving or waxing. However, waxing may be better for some hair colors that do not respond well to laser.

Shaving only cuts hair at the surface, so regrowth happens quickly. Laser targets the follicle to reduce future growth over time. Many clients choose laser to reduce shaving frequency, razor bumps and irritation.

Yes. Shaving is the preferred method of hair removal between sessions. Avoid waxing,
plucking, threading or epilating unless your dermatologist says otherwise.

Common side effects include temporary redness, mild swelling, warmth or sensitivity. Less common risks include burns, blisters, infection, scarring or temporary or lasting skin color changes. Choosing an experienced provider and following care instructions helps reduce risks.

Laser may not be suitable for people with active infections, open wounds, recent sunburn, certain skin conditions, or certain medications that increase light sensitivity. Pregnant clients are often advised to postpone treatment. A consultation is important to check suitability.

Many clinics recommend waiting until after pregnancy. Although laser hair removal is not usually performed deep in the body, hormonal changes can affect hair growth and skin sensitivity. Please consult your healthcare provider and clinic before treatment.

Yes, but the settings and aftercare may need to be adjusted. Tell your dermatologist if you have sensitive skin, eczema, allergies, pigmentation issues,or a history of reactions after cosmetic treatments.

Yes, bikini and Brazilian laser hair removal are common treatments. Your dermatologist will explain the process, privacy measures, preparation and aftercare so you feel comfortable and informed.

Choose a clinic with trained and experienced dermatologists, proper consultation procedures, high-quality equipment, clear aftercare instructions, and settings tailored to your skin and hair type. The AAD warns that laser hair removal can be risky in inexperienced hands, so provider skill matters.

Yes. A consultation helps assess your skin type, hair type, medical history, medications,
treatment goals and suitability. It also allows your dermatologist to explain expected results, risks, number of sessions and aftercare before you begin.
